A number of polls taken during various PL/SQL-related presentations paint a very strange picture: one of the most-critical FREE server-side performance-tuning tools is almost totally unknown! If you ask basic questions such as, “How much time is spent on routine A?” or “How often is function B called?” most developers would start to hand-code their own solutions instead of utilizing the Oracle PL/SQL hierarchical profiler (HProf). This is not because the provided functionality is disliked, but the fact is that most developers are simply not aware of its existence. This session is an attempt to alter this trend and re-introduce HProf to a wider audience.

However, in enterprise environments, just running Docker containers is not sufficient—Oracle applications and services must be architected for availability, durability, and reliability. This session explores using images pulled directly from Oracle Container Cloud’s registry and stacks, and defined using Docker Compose, to quickly spin up single-instance Oracle services, then deploying it all to a Kubernetes Pod.

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) harnessed the power of Oracle Database 12c and Universal Connection Pool to keep applications running during times of planned and unplanned infrastructure outages. Since implementing Universal Connection Pool, ERCOT has had several occasions where one of the nodes of the Oracle RAC cluster failed, and had to be restarted or patched. These activities occurred with virtually no application issues. In this session learn how the Electric Reliability Council of Texas reduced its outage window and gained confidence in its migration to Oracle RAC and upgrade to Oracle Database 12c by using the power of Oracle Data Guard and its snapshot standby database. It was able to identify and correct any issues before the actual migration and upgrade day by performing the steps on an actual production database and converting it back to a physical standby when the test was complete.
