QXW 2019: The Latest Orchestrator Enhancements

Quest Experience Week

The JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Orchestrator is proving to be one of the most significant, transformational enhancements ever to be added to the JD Edwards product. It is a major driving force of the JD Edwards 9.2 Digital Platform. As part of Quest Experience Week (QXW) 2019, AJ Schifano, Oracle JD Edwards Product Manager, presented the latest Orchestrator enhancements.

Orchestrator Overview

The JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Orchestrator transforms how you use your JD Edwards EnterpriseOne system. It will transform how you utilize mobile applications, user interfaces, notifications, workflows, process simplification, no-code extensions, system management and monitoring, Robotic Process Automation (RPA), Cloud Services, and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Before Orchestrator, you had traditional ERP users behind the JD Edwards applications and your business data. With Orchestrator, the AIS Server, and the Orchestrator Studio, you have Internet of Things (IoT), user interface, process simplification, integration, and intelligent ERP behind your business data.

Latest Orchestrator Enhancements

When you log in to use Orchestrator with JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.2.4, you are taken to the Orchestrator Studio, which is home to several options, such as orchestrations, notifications, etc. The subcomponents of an orchestration include:

  • Service requests
  • Cross references
  • White lists
  • Rules

Within the Service Requests section, you can choose from Form Requests, Custom Requests, Data Requests, Messages, Connectors, Watchlists, and Reports. With 9.2.4, all of these options are flattened out and displayed on the entrance screen whereas, in 9.2.3, they are on different screens and not as easily accessible.

An additional difference between the updated and the previous Orchestrator Studio is that in the previous studio, when launching an orchestration, you could search by groups, personal, pending approval, rework, reserved, or shared. However, in the updated Orchestrator Studio, in addition to the previous search options, you can search and order by name, product code, or date which is very beneficial in this area of Orchestrator.

Also, in the previous studio, you are able to see a visual picture of the steps and requirements of the orchestration. The visual representation is just a static picture. Now, the picture of the steps is a visual flow with an active view and also a design mode. This aspect of the latest Orchestrator enhancements makes it easier to view, edit, and change.

Scheduler

The Scheduler option is designed to run orchestrations and notifications on a schedule. In the previous Orchestrator, you had to start and stop via REST APIs.  This was very tedious and cumbersome to do. In the new Orchestrator, you have the quick links to run orchestrations, JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, Scheduler, and the option to import.

When you click on Scheduler, you are presented with all of your Orchestrations and then given the option to schedule them with a click of your mouse. This feature is what gives your EnterpriseOne business a pulse and a heartbeat.

Orchestrator Studio

Deployment of and security for Orchestrator Studio 9.2.4 is very simple. It is deployed simply as part of the Application Interface Services (AIS) server, and any AIS server can act as an Orchestrator Studio and Scheduler. There is no separate server that is required for Oracle Application Development Framework.  This can be deployed to Oracle WebLogic Server or IBM WebSphere Application Server. Finally, this can be secured via standard EnterpriseOne application security, and it doesn’t require you to add users to an AIS white list.
